In 1294 church and city authorities decided to improve a small building of the Santa Reparata church and sanctify it in honor of Saint Maria. Then people could see the Santa-Maria walls arising above the Florence downtown.

Architects had been working over the project for many years. They even managed to build gallery walls. A very high altar was supposed to stand there. The walls were thought to be a base of a majestic cupola. The designers were planning to construct a huge eight-edged cupola (diameter 54,8 m).
