Salvation of the cathedral |
| It is interesting to note that the sphere and cross were plunged to the ground during the lightning. The lightning frequently struck into the cathedral, causing destruction. However, in 1600 the impact was so destructive that Pope Roman commanded to place inside the cross holy relic in order to protect the cathedral from the lightning in the future. In 1602 the new eight sections of sphere were prepared. Each of them rose separately through the narrow windows of the lamp to the terrace, where they were soldered to the form of sphere. The latter was then covered with gilding. Judging by documents, eight people poisoned by vapors of mercury, which was used for the gilding. The adventures of lamp did not end on this. After Brunelleski’s death the “Opera Dale Duomo” managers decreed to make the opening in it with a diameter of 2,5 cm, framed by bronze ring. Through this opening solar rays had to fall on gnomon, or sundials on the floor. From these rays the shadow was obtained; length and position of the rays indicated summer and winter solstice. The inventor of this device for the gnomon became Toskanelli, Florentine mathematician and astronomer. |
| “Astronomical properties” of lamp and gnomon were opened by astronomer P.Leonardo Jimenez in 1755. He wanted to observe winter and summer solstice and anew calibrated gnomon. |
